The U. S. cycling team--some of them anyway--
wore black masks into Beijing yesterday to protect them from pollution. I wonder who thought that would be a great idea? It would be something like the Chinese gymnastics team wearing flak jackets into New York City because they heard that crime was out of control. Do you think we would be offended?

John,
I disagree. It's common for folks all over Asia to wear masks, sometimes because the air is bad, sometimes because they are sick, and sometimes just to avoid getting sick. In Japan, it's very common and I believe very admirable for people with a cold to wear a mask. Cyclists are hyper-sensitive to any unneeded waste of energy, and their food and air quality. Of course the EPO quality is also a concern also! (Just Kidding). These guys were doing a very culturally acceptable thing to (in their perception) increase their ability to compete. No harm, no foul! Better I say then trashing their dorm rooms aka the US hockey spectacle!----Dave
Not sure I agree (except it is better than trashing their dorms). Any Olympic team is obviously very high profile and while face masks are worn in Asia, they aren't THAT ubiquitous.
Funny about EPO, too bad it is so abused and misued by many cyclists. I LOVE cycling, but one can't tell if a performance is great because the cyclist is great, or because their drugs are...
