New York Fed Chairman: AFL-CIO Union Official?!?

Huh? A Union official has been appointed as head of the New York Fed? When I read this I thought it was a joke, but no, it is serious. Let me get this straight. We are in an economic crisis, and we appoint a guy who has NO financial experience as head of the most important Fed board. What are these guys smoking?
