Bush and the "Surge"

This is the most interesting analysis of what Bush has in mind in regards to Iraq (Iran is what he has in mind). I can't help but agree with Buchanan's analysis, if Bush really wants to "win" in Iraq, this is not the way to go about it. If he wants to "bait" Iran into an excuse to attack it, this might be the way to do so. If he is thinking this, it will either end up being a brilliant idea (if successful) or seal his place in history as "most likely person to hasten us to Armageddon." Fascinating to watch. George Will has an excellent analysis as well.

Although I certainly agree that "The Surge" is not the answer in Iraq, it is becoming more and more obvious to me that even if Bush fails miserably in Iraq (which he seems well on his way to doing) the US will stay engaged in the area long after his Presidency has ended. Iraq in particular, and the Middle East in general, has become a deeply nuanced and complicated situation that can be answered neither by the Bush Camps increasingly simple minded policies nor by the lefts strategies of appeasement and non-intervention.

Wow, I'm glad that at least some of America listened intently to what Bush said. When he said that he'd be deploying patriot missiles to Iraq an alarm went off in my head. They haven't used patriot missiles in Iraq since the very beginning and, in Iraq, there is absolutely no need whatsoever for patriot missiles. Bush better hope this works because it obviously is his last chance and he better hope it's a different card than the ace of spades he has up his sleeves.

John, I think your absolutely right. We will be in Iraq, to some extent or another, for the foreseable future. Iraq will become just like South Korea did after the "end" of the Korean war, a permanent duty station.

Well...we will be there, but the point that few are admitting is that it will be a tar baby, we will be stuck there with no way to leave and no way to win. At 8 billion a month, this has ripped a hole in our budget which will be of great significance for the future. As I have felt all along, every great power when it begins to decline is humiliated on the world stage, exposing its soft underbelly. I believe Iraq is this point for the United States.
