Why Boys Should Be Allowed to Play with (Imaginary) Guns

The government (U.K.) has finally figured out what all the men have always understood. It's a good thing to let boys play with imaginary guns. Wouldn't it be funny to see the reaction if the U.S. government came out with this policy. Hysteria I'm thinking.

A Very Sad Story

A MySpace web hoax led a young teen to kill herself. A very sad story...

Gotta Love John Piper!

Piper weighs in on women in the military!
"A man who endorses women in combat is not pro-woman; he’s a wimp. He should be ashamed. For most of history, in most cultures, he would have been utterly scorned as a coward to promote such an idea. Part of the meaning of manhood as God created us is the sense of responsibility for the safety and welfare of our women."

Facebook Profile Saves a Life

Who knew that having a Facebook profile would probably save one lady from rabies. This world is a weird place.

Rove as Bush's Napoleon?

This is a fascinating piece in the L. A. Times by Jonah Goldberg. It is probably the best piece on Rove and his legacy that I've read.

Why Prohibition Was Repealed

Now here is a fascinating little piece. My own experience in my history classes was exactly what the author describes. He makes a very convincing argument that it was a government in search of tax revenue that forced repeal of the 18th amendment. Very interesting...

Cat Comforts the Dying

This is a really weird story about a cat that somehow senses when nursing home residents are nearing death. When it crawls up next to them they generally will die within four hours. Interesting.

Ship of Fools

A biased, but revealing look at the type of conservative who thinks that Bush can do no wrong.

How We are Arming Hamas

Once again our foreign policy is a failure, to such an extent that we are actually arming Hamas! Now there is some good planning.

I'm Not the Only One Who Can't Understand the Quebecois

So, now I find out the reason I can never understand the Quebecois, they don't speak French like the French! According to someone I talked to in Paris, the Quebecois speak French like Louis XIV!

Cheney's Fingerprints

Now we have word that it was Dick Cheney behind the push to continue illegal wiretaps (which John Ashcroft refused to do). I don't think this should surprise anyone, Cheney's fingerprints have been all over the worst of the abuses in regards to the terror war from the very beginning (including blocking promotions of those who disagreed with his way).

Sin as a Psychological Problem

The BBC highlights this story of a sex-addict who was fired by IBM and is now suing them for 5 million. Rather than fire him, they should have recognized that he needed counseling and support. Hmm...isn't this a job for your friends, or the church. Since when did businesses have to get into the phsychological counseling business? Society now sees sin as nothing more than a psychological problem which needs to be fixed. This guy will probably win...especially if the jury is in Los Angeles!

Why Gonzales Needs to Go

Monica Goodling's testimony before Congress is a pretty good example of why Attorney General Gonzales should be relieved. He discussed testimony with her after news of the investigation broke, while testifying that he did not discuss it with anyone. Not to mention having a sudden memory loss on pretty much anything connected to the firings. Yep. I believe him...

Kicking the Can Down the Road

This is an interesting analysis of what Bush will do if the surge doesn't work, which it does not appear to be doing. I think the fundamental thinking on the part of the Bush administration at this point is, "how can we keep this thing going until we are out of office and it is someone else's problem." The beauty of this is that they can then sit in their armchairs and say, "if we were in charge, we would have won."

Empire or Republic

While I do not agree with this guy's analysis of the problem, I think he lays out the facts quite well in regards to President Bush and our march toward authoritarianism. President Bush has laid the foundation for future presidents to take even greater authority and control and so, I believe historians will see his presidency as the dividing mark between republic and approaching dictatorship.
Who would have thought that there would come a time when we would incarcerate an American citizen indefinitely and without due process? Who would have thought that we would have a President who attaches "signing statements" to bills that he signs claiming that he has the right to disregard the very law that he just signed? It is appalling really, and all allowed by a complacent Congress!

Shock Alert: Oil Missing in Iraq

Surely whoever scooped this piece is in line for a Pulitzer Prize. If you can believe this - I know it is hard to believe - someone is actually stealing oil in Iraq AND USING IT FOR THEIR OWN GAIN!!! Umm...isn't this pretty much how the country has run since the war?

This Could Only Happen in Mumbai!

So apparently this guy is towing a 737 through the streets of Mumbai, reaches an overpass which he cannot get under and...he abandons the 737 in the streets! I have been to Mumbai and this story is believable. One cannot imagine what a real traffic jam is like until one has experienced it in the streets of Mumbai. Unbelievable, like no place else in the world.
