Olympic Champ Abandons Faith
Jonathan Edwards has the world record in the triple jump set in 1995. He was an outspoken Christian but has apparently had a crisis of faith. I don't know anything about him (he's from Britain). Mr. Edwards majored in physics so he is nothing if not intelligent. What meaning he can draw from a world that began through chance and time and mutation, I cannot begin to conceive. He will have no basis for morality. No basis for values. No basis for meaning in life. It is all just opinions if there is no God, because his opinions and values are no better nor worse than anyone else's. How profoundly sad and meaningless!

It is not sad or meaningless that Jonathan has now been able to form his own world view rather than be swept along with his father's religion and blindly following others in society. I am pleased he can now think for himself rather than blindly accept the hogwash put about by people in authority. Jonathan is now a free man and he no longer will need to devote time to the dumb rituals of practising Christians everywhere.
Hmm...I suppose you are correct that he has formed his own world view. My question for Jonathan would be, "If there is no God then where can one find meaning in life beyond your own opinions? Is there such a thing as good and evil? What is the standard for what is good and what is evil?" I cannot imagine he has an adequate answer for this apart from God, other than stating his own opinion (evolved opinion?) which, according to his own world view is neither better nor worse than anyone else's. This leaves one with the dilemma of saying, "how can one condemn anyone else for their own (evolved?) opinions?" Kim Jong Il in Korea for instance. So he starves millions of his own people. By what standard can I condemn him for working out his own opinion that power (his own) is the ultimate reality?
