Hilary Clinton on Meet the Press talking about...herself, not talking about herself. Read David Brook's comments and you'll see what I mean. A couple of excerpts:

She broadcast her own humility: “You know, I’m very other-directed. I don’t like talking about myself.” She also described the central role she plays in the lives of all living creatures in the universe: “The Iraqi government, they watch us, they listen to us. I know very well that they follow everything that I say.”

As she told Tim Russert on Sunday: “You have a woman running to break the highest and hardest glass ceiling. I don’t think either of us wants to inject race or gender in this campaign. We’re running as individuals.”

Wow! This lady is trained in Newspeak (see 1984 by George Orwell). The delicious art of saying something and then implying just the opposite.

Finally! Someone Speaks the Truth About the Election Process

Someone from the Washington Times at last speaks the truth about the out-of-control process of presidential elections. The first two paragraphs say it all:

As this negative and insufferably long presidential primary season continues, two truths — with apologies to Thomas Jefferson — have become self-evident.

The first is that Iowa and New Hampshire seriously need to be kicked to the curb. When about 10 percent of the residents of Iowa can hold the candidates and the national media hostage for a year, it's time to say, "enough."

Why Do They Hate Us?

Interesting perspective from a Pakistani who has been immersed in both Pakistani and American culture (as balanced a treatment as you will find). He is absolutely correct when he says that Americans are woefully ignorant of how American foreign policy shapes (and often destroys) other countries. This was forcefully illustrated when Ron Paul, an extraordinarly smart candidate for President, opined that part of the reason we were struggling with Islamic fundamentalists was because of blowback from American foreign policy in the region. Rudolph Giuliani (who should study some history) ridiculed his answer, but of course Ron Paul was correct. Read the article to understand.

John Edwards is the easiest to peg. He looks just like the phony that he is.

His talk about poor children going to bed hungry may rouse the far left in his party but in fact the lowest-income people are even more obese than the rest of us, not that the facts make the slightest difference to Senator Edwards.

When it comes to articulation, no one can beat Barack Obama. He can even convince people that he has new ideas, when in fact they are old 1960s ideas that have failed repeatedly, ever since that irresponsible decade.

Then there is Hillary Clinton, formerly known as “front-runner” Hillary Clinton or the “inevitable” candidate Hillary Clinton.

It is painful to watch her trying to act human and it would be even more painful to see the Clintons back in the White House that they disgraced in so many ways.

Bush's Most Insidious Legacy

Bush claims power to open Americans' mail without warrants, explains the title of an article by the CS Monitor. So far in six years President Bush has appended "signing statements" to 750 bills which claim that if he so desires, he has the authority to disregard the very bill that he is signing! I believe this will be his most insidious legacy because every President after him will do the same thing based on Bush's precedent, thus making Rex Lex (the King is Law) rather than classic Lex Rex (Law is King), the characteristic upon which Western democracy is based. I cannot help but think that this will lay the foundation for the eventual end of every democracy (as Plato said): tyranny. It may not happen in 10 or 20 years, but it will happen, and history will look back on Bush's presidency as the watershed.
